The iSeal adaptable sealant consists of a composite material which expands upon application of heat and then permanently retains the expanded shape. This light and flexible sealant material is inserted into a gap of any shape or geometry (e.g., a radial gap). Available as a flexible cord at any length from 1 cm to several meters. Under the normal temperature conditions, the sealant cord is almost flat and can be fitted into the radial gap either by a soft-tip tool or hand. The size of the gap to be sealed can vary from 5 mm to 50 mm or higher, as required. The expansion rate of the sealant composite can vary from 100 to 500% based on the initial inactivated size of the sealant cord used. The heating required for activation can be supplied either by an external heat source (e.g., hot air blower) or internal heat available within the operating environment of the application being addressed (e.g., hot-steam pipes). The product can be also delivered in the form of different-size expandable rings of certain diameters and widths.

iSeal expandable sealing cord product comprises three key components (as shown in the picture below):

  • Outer layer made of high-temperature resistant special rubber (heat resistant up to 250°C, or 484°F) for properly sealing the gap between even or uneven surfaces; also provides additional chemical protection to the middle layer. Stable when exposed to organic or inorganic acids or alkalis, both at normal and elevated temperatures;

  • Middle layer is made of a thermo-active smart component that deforms (expands) upon activation and then permanently maintains its shape (e.g., circular). This material can resist the temperatures higher than 300°F;

  • Inner layer contains special flexible compressed/vacuumed foam which provides additional permanent expansion forces upon inflation and thus ensures the sealant cord remains fitted into the (radial) gap and reliably maintains a high differential pressure under any ambient and operating conditions.

One sealant cord size can seal across a specific broad range of radial gaps (e.g., up to 0.5"). For various ranges of gap geometries/sizes and various ranges of differential pressure, an appropriately sized sealant cord can be manufactured on order. Through thickness variation of each of the above-mentioned layered materials, various sealing specifications can be fulfilled.
